What Is A Bow Shackle

A Bow Shackle is an O shaped link which can be closed with a bolt. These shackles are also often referred to as an Anchor Shackle.
The rounded design of the Bow Shackle allows it to take load from any direction without the risk of developing a side load strain which can happen with other shackle shapes. This allows them to accommodate heavier loads than other styles of shackle.
The rounded shape also makes the Bow Shackle a good option for use with wide straps.
Bow Shackles are a useful item to have in the kit if you regularly venture off road for camping or boating trips as they make a handy item to have for vehicle recovery.
Shackles should be inspected regularly for any signs of stress, general wear and metal fatigue. Potential areas of damage or failure for most shackle types can usually be found in the body, the pin or pin holes. So, it’s important to check these areas closely to avoid any sudden breakages when they are under load.
When checking the shackle, carefully look for any signs of bending, warping or stretching. This would indicate that the shackle is not coping with the load forces being placed on it.
Also check the pin for and distortion as a bent pin may not seat properly which dramatically increases the risk of it loosening under load. It’s recommended to never force the pin into place by hammering. If the pin won’t seat properly, it should be replaced with the correct pin for the specific shackle.
If you are using shackles in vehicle towing situations, like trailer, caravan, boat, etc. then it is essential that you only use rated Yellow Pin Shackles.
These shackles are individually stamped with the Grade S, date of manufacture, and the WLL (working load limit).
This measurement dictates the size of the shackle needed which is a compulsory requirement.
