Sash chain was originally designed for use as a replacement for sash cord which is used in the manufacture of sash windows. These are a hung window style that consist of one or more moveable panels.

In this use, the sash cord or chain supports the weight of the window panel, facilitates the raising and lowering movement, and holds the panel in position when partly open.

Sash chain is also commonly known as flat link chain and is made from stamped steel.
