Choosing Balustrade Wire

Choosing Balustrade Wire

Posted by Chain Direct on 12th May 2021

Wire Balustrade has become very popular in recent years and is now commonly used for not only Balustrade applications, but also many other creative and decorative uses in both residential and commercial property.

With many types of Balustrade fittings available on today’s market, you now have the ability to choose the ideal wire and fitting combination to suit your application and create the look you are after.

For this reason, wire Balustrade is a perfect way to compliment any open area like decking, balconies and terraces, to not only make the area look great, but also provide a safety barrier.

When compared to other solutions, like glass panels, wire Balustrade is popular as it allows for natural airflow to pass through the area, and also doesn’t require as much regular cleaning, as glass can soon become dirty from rain and dust.

There are two commonly used grades of stainless Balustrade wire on the market, which are grade 304 and 316.

Grade 304 contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel, while Grade 316 contains 16% chromium, 10% nickel and 2% molybdenum. The molybdenum content in Grade 316 Balustrade wire helps it to resist corrosion when exposed to the elements, particularly when installed near the ocean.

Therefore, we stock recommend Grade 316 Balustrade wire, as it gives the best durability in outdoor applications.

There are also different types of wire constructions to choose from, with the most popular being 1 x 19 and 7 x 7. The 1 x 19 Balustrade wire rope is a smooth and stiff construction which is a popular choice due to its aesthetically pleasing appearance. This construction also meets the NCC Regulations when installed correctly.

The 7 x 7 construction is also popular choice, particularly for DIY installations as it is more flexible and easier to work with and can be used with hand swaging tools.

We have in stock a big range of Balustrade wire rope, fitting kits and swagging tools to make the DIY job easy.
